Modhera Sun Temple is located in the Modhera village of Mehsana, Gujarat. The distance from Ahmedabad is 100 kms and 35 kms from Patan. Patan was ancient capital of the Solanki Dynasty. Solnki were dietary of God Sun. This temple is dedicated to God Sun built in the year 1027 AD by the King Bhimdev I near the bank of Pushpavati river.
Sun Temple is masterpiece of carving and ancient architectural work. This temple is also a marvel example of vaastu shastra and astronomy. it is also believe that these Sun Temple were constructed before the Konark Sun Temple, Orrisa. Legendary also said that Lord Rama and Sita halted here after defeating the Ravana and conduct yagna to clean himself from the sin of killing a Brahmin - Ravana.
This Sun Temple is taken-over by Archaeological Survey of India for maintaining. This site also included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This Temple was ruined by Mohmand Gazhni and plundered the Golden Idol from the Temple.
The Temple has 3 main parts namely Sunkund, Sabha Mandap and Guda Mandap. Ramkund and Sunkund are main and temple inside the are pantheon of Lords include Shiva, Ganesha, Vishnu and Sitlamata. Temple was designed in such a way that first rays of the sun is fall on the Lord Sun. Ever Single inch of structure is carved with the sculpture of God, Goddesses, birds and flowers. This Monument of the Solanki speak their Glory.
It is also said that main idol is made from Gold which depict Lord Sun seated with his sarthi on the chariot having seven horses. Moreover, Diamond on the Idol was so bright that first ray of Sun set on the Diamond which brighten the whole temple.
