Holi is a festival of colour brings Joy and Happiness. Holi is celebrated not in India but also in other countries. This festival is celebrated every year after the full moon of Phalgun month which fall in February end or in the March as per English calendar. Holi is also a symbol of starting Spring season.
The famous legendary of Prahlad and Hiranyakashyap is associated with Holi. Prahlad is son of Hiranyakashyap and devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap consider himself as God and forced everybody to worship him. Hiranyakashyap became so angry on his Son's devotion to Lord Vishnu & he was so upset that he decided to kill Prahlad.
The Demon tried to kill Prahlad but non of their action stand untouched to Prahlad. He tried to affect Prahlad against Lord Vishnu but he was unsuccessful. finally Hiranyakashyap has called his Sister, Holika who had superpower of preventing from fire. She along with Prahlad set on bonfire but Prahlad was remain unharmed however Holika died. Since then the Hoilka Dahan is celebrated. Holi is a two day festival. On the first day bonfire is created which known as Holika Dahan. Second day is called as Dhuleti.
Another legendary for celebration of Holi is that on this day, Lord Krishna tell his mother Yashoda about his dark skin and fair skin of Radha. Maa Yashoda reply on his complain that Lord Krishna can colour Radha in any colour he liked and Radha would be no more any fair then Lord Krishna.
According to other legend it is also said that in South India, people celebrate the day on account of sacrifice of Lord Kamadeva who put his life to bring Lord Shiva out of meditation and save the world. Lord Shiva angry on Kamadeva and burn him by opening of third eye. In some part of South India Holi also known as Kamavila, Kamadahanam etc dedicated to Lord Kamadeva.
Holi festival is celebrated in different way in all part of the Country. One of the traditional way of celebration of holi in Mathura is Lath Mar Holi. Holi celebration has different way and name in various regions of India. In Some part of India, celebration of holi continue more then 2 days.
