Navratri is one of the biggest festival celebrated not only in Gujarat but also in all over India. If we elaborate Navratri word, Nava means nine & ratri means night i.e. nine nights. Nine number is belelive to be very auspicious number in India. Navratri is celebrated five times a year for nine day and night. Present Navratri is Sharad Navratri which is known as Maha Navratri and has special significance. Each night of Navratri celebrated and worshiped for Maa Shakti Goddess nine forms of power . World famous "Garba" and "Dandiya" are performed during festival. Garba performed under circle symbolised to be a circle of life cycle.
Navratri is celebrated for goddess Durga's victory over mahisasur. As per legend, Goddess Durga agreed to marry evil Mahisasur, if he defeat her in battle. This battle commenced for nine days & on 10th day Maa Durga killed him. Another legend said that Lord Raama fought for nine days with Ravana and on 10th day they killed him. 10th day is known as Dushera as well as Vijayadashmi.
During Navratri it is believe that starting new ventures is good as Navratri days are very auspicious. After Dushera the season also may change from Monsoon to Winter. At many places fairs are held on or after Dushera.
The effigy of Ravana is burnt on Dushera to honor victory of Good over evil. People symbolised Ravana head with different head of evil exist in the world i.e. injustice,
